Paper Sculpture

Description:

In this workshop,  students will create abstract paper sculptures using different paper folding, cutting, and coiling techniques. They will be shown a short presentation that includes key artists and their artwork they can take inspiration from.

Rationale:

We did this workshop at the Normal Public Library where we taught a diverse set of students ranging in age and skill level. I enjoyed this experience because I gained valuable communication skills by teaching the elderly and adults.

Wood Burning

Description:

We want to introduce our students to woodburning. Pyrography is the official name of woodburning and references using different hot tools to create a variety of burn marks to create a piece of art. Introducing our students to artists like Topsy Tjulyata and Jordan Mang-osan, students will create wood-burning pieces based on their culture. Students have the creative liberty to create a piece that they feel represents them!

Rationale:

As I was preparing for the lesson, I was able to learn a new skill in wood burning which was fun. The students were able to think about different aspects of their culture, such as military culture, farming culture, and ethnic culture.

Culturally Responsive Pedagogy

Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 6 - Reading, Writing, and Oral CommunicationThe competent teacher has foundational knowledge of reading, writing, and oral communication within the content area and recognizes and addresses student reading, writing, and oral communication needs to facilitate the acquisition of content knowledge.

Description:

In this class, we were assigned to choose one of many teaching theories to research and create a booklet. I chose to learn more about Culturally Responsive Pedagogy.

Rationale:

In this booklet, I wrote about different possible ways to use it in the classroom and the history behind it such as who is the one proposed the idea. I chose Culturally responsive pe pedagogy because It is something I want to incorporate into my teaching. After all, I feel it is the best way to connect to students, especially in a diverse area like Chicago where I am from.

PROFESSIONALISM, ADVOCACY & LEADERSHIP

Illinois Professional Teaching Standard 9 - Professionalism, Leadership, and Advocacy – The competent teacher is an ethical and reflective practitioner who exhibits professionalism; provides leadership in the learning community; and advocates for students, parents or guardians, and the profession.

Description:

This is a photo from the BFA show featuring multiple BFA students called "No Adults Allowed" which was about creating art that reflected childhood memories

Rationale:

This exhibition was very interesting to see, the way everyone has had similar experiences from their childhoods like playing with the same toys or games even though in other aspects we may have had different vastly different lives

Description:

The photo to the left is from the opening show of a collaborative show between Isle Miller and Madelyn Turner-Havens called "I Can't Control These Urges"

Rationale:

The way all the artwork was displayed enhanced the experience of feeling overwhelmed and stressed, some areas were more condensed with the artwork almost cluttered. I appreciated how they took into consideration the space especially since it was so large that it could have felt empty even with the amount of work that they had but it all fit together cohesively.

Description:

I designed a giant poster that people could color and draw on for a fundraiser event for MARWEN arts. In this image, I incorporated different elements that represent Chicago such as the flag and different flora and fauna native to the area

Rationale:

This work was made digitally using Procreate on an iPad, it was commissioned by a member of the board of directors for MARWEN. This was supposed to be an interactive piece so that is why it is all black and white for people to color in, some butterflies are native to the Chicago area and are in like opacity to not clutter the image but the number of butterflies is also the same as the amount of stars in the Chicago flag.
